Dear Members and Friends,
The disaster in Haiti is of concern to us all. It is a very poor country and the devastation from the recent earthquake is widespread.
The United Methodist News Service has already posted stories on the tragedy at http://www.umc.org/haiti and will have ongoing coverage about United Methodist mission teams that are already in Haiti, response efforts by the United Methodist Committee on Relief, and what local churches are doing to provide aid.
We can help in three ways:
- First, we can contribute financially through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). We will be taking a special offering on Sunday and accepting monies after Sunday for the Haiti disaster. Please make your check payable to the West Jefferson UMC and mark it Haiti Disaster Response #418325. We will immediately forward this money to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Through the United Methodist Committee on Relief, 100% of your contribution will be used for relief in Haiti. Even the administrative monies needed to get the assistance there is provided through our connectional ministry giving (apportionments), so this is the most effective way to give to the relief effort.
- Second, UMCOR is also asking that we consider putting together Health Kits as part of our response. We will provide health kit information on Sunday.
- Third, you can join me in praying for the people of Haiti and all those who are working to help them.
Together with other relief organizations, we can be the hands and feet of Christ, serving people so desperately in need!
