2010 Excellence in Missions Award

Giving of herself, working always for the Lord is a trait that Pauline Cullman has had all her life. Her strong commitment in outreach and helping others has earned her the 2010 Excellence in Missions Award.

Pauline Cullman was born on July 28, 1925 and grew up on the south side of Columbus, graduating from South High School. She married her husband, Fred right before he joined the Armed Services. She and Fred lived on Collingwood Road, south of High Street in Columbus and then moved with their children, Paula and Chris to West Jefferson in 1955. Pauline worked a variety of jobs; the bank, the Farm Bureau, at Firestone, culminating with her job as a secretary at West Jefferson High School for over 25 years. Grandma Fred, as most of the kids who passed through the school knew her, was a caring presence for all.

Pauline was a faithful member of the South High Evangelical United Brethern Church until the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged with the United Methodist Church. It was that time that she joined the West Jefferson UMC.

Pauline has been active in the West Jefferson UMC as a long time teacher of the Brave Christians Adult Sunday School Class, member of the Prayer Group, United Methodist Women, Membership Secretary until last year, long time Financial Secretary, constant worker for the Vacation Bible School, member of the Nurture and Care Committee and presently on the Worship Committee. She has been a spiritual example and mentor to many, including a number of confirmation students.

Pauline worked with Food through Faith in London and was among the first volunteers as we formed the Food Pantry located at our Church. She has brought genuine caring and friendship to volunteers and clients; she encourages clients of the Food Pantry to give back through volunteer work; she prays for those who need guidance and she has created an atmosphere of loving hospitality which has changed lives. She is a model of Christian discipleship. Congratulations Pauline!

Matthew 28:16-20
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in [1] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Missions Activities in our Church

This summer, members of our church provided and received numerous blessings through such mission opportunities as Vacation Bible School, Mountain Top, Back to School Clothing and School Supply Give a way, and the School of Christian Mission in addition to the regularly scheduled missions activities that our members participate in.  Thank you!

There are several mission opportunities during the remainder of the year that we ask you to hold up in prayer.  They include:

  • Preparing baby kits for the Festival of Sharing
  • Preparing Emergency Kits for Church World Services
  • Pay It Forward! (A very special opportunity to share your talents with our community)
  • Legislative Mission activities
  • Election Day Dinner

If you have an interest in participating with a mission activity or serving on the planning committee, please contact Maria Kelly at 614/879-8303 or mariakelly@aol.com or Pastor Pat Oesterle.
